Crisis Services
Should I Call A Crisis Line?
There are numerous 24-hour crisis lines that are free to call, and that are ready to respond to whatever situation you might be in. People on the other end of these lines are usually volunteers, doing this service because they genuinely care about people like you. Quite likely, they’ve had an experience in their lives that makes them aware of and sensitive to the fact that a listening ear can be a life-saver.
Sometimes people who are in a crisis don’t recognize how serious their situation is. Something that may seem trivial or small to you could actually be really important and worth discussing with someone else. You don’t have to wait until you’re in an emergency to a call a crisis line—that’s what 911 is for.
People who work on crisis lines usually undergo training to help them respond to any situation, whether it’s suicide, self-harm, issues of gender or sexuality, relationship difficulties, addictions, substance use, or other concerns related to your health and well-being. The goal of counseling services is not to tell you what to do or who to be, but to help you figure out what you need and how you can get what you need in the healthiest way possible.
Crisis services may also have counseling and other supports for people who manage the phone lines, so don’t worry that you might drag someone down or harm them in any way. They wouldn’t be doing this service if they weren’t in a position to respond to a wide variety of issues.
